What is a Spark Test in Welding?
A spark test is a quick and easy way to identify the type of metal being tested. The metal is brought into contact with a power-driven, high-speed grinding wheel which produces spark patterns. These patterns are unique to several classes of ferrous metals.
What is the spark test used for?
The most common use for a spark test is to identify the presence of carbon in the steel. Carbon is present in all steels, but the amount of carbon present can vary widely. The higher the carbon content, the more difficult the steel is to weld.
Spark tests are also used to identify other metals, such as stainless steel and aluminum. By analyzing the spark pattern, a welder can quickly determine if a metal is suitable for welding.
Spark tests are not always accurate, and should not be relied upon as the sole method of metal identification. However, they can be a helpful tool in the welding process.
How is spark testing done?
A welder will hold the metal against a power-driven, high-speed grinding wheel. As the wheel spins, it will strike the metal and create sparks. The sparks will fly off in patterns that are unique to each type of metal.
How can you tell if the metal has sparks?
The best way to tell if the metal has sparked is to look at the spark pattern. Each type of metal will produce a unique pattern. However, some metals may not produce any sparks at all. In these cases, the welder will need to rely on other methods of identification, such as chemical tests or X-ray analysis.

The wrought iron spark test is used to identify the presence of carbon in wrought iron.
