What is Killed Steel in Welding?
Killed steel is steel that has been deoxidized during the melting process to prevent the evolution of gases during solidification. This results in a weld that is void-free and less susceptible to porosity and other defects. Killed steels are usually low carbon steels that contain elements such as:
- manganese,
- silicon,
- or aluminum to promote deoxidation.
The main advantage of using killed steel in welding is that it produces a high-quality weld with minimal defects. This makes it ideal for critical applications where weld quality is of the utmost importance, such as in the construction of pressure vessels or pipelines. Killed steels are also easier to weld than non-killed steels, making them a good choice for less experienced welders.
If you’re welding killed steel, it’s important to use the correct filler metal and welding procedure to ensure a high-quality weld. Consult your welding engineer or qualified welding professional to help you select the right filler metal and welding procedure for your project.
What is killed steel and rimmed steel?
Killed steel is steel that has been treated to deoxidize it during the manufacturing process. This means that there are no voids or pockets of gas in the weld, which can cause the welding to be weaker. Rimmed steel is a type of killed steel that contains less than 0.03% carbon.
Rimmed steel vs killed steel
The main difference between rimmed steel and killed steel is the amount of carbon present in each type of steel.
Killed steel properties
Killed steel is known for its good weldability, high strength, and low carbon content. These properties make it ideal for use in critical applications where weld quality is of the utmost importance.
Aluminum killed steel
Aluminum-killed steel is a type of killed steel that contains aluminum. This makes the steel more resistant to weld porosity and other defects.
