What is Backhand Welding?

In welding, backhand welding is a technique where the welding torch or gun is directed opposite the direction of welding. This can be used in situations where it is difficult to weld in the conventional forward direction, such as when welding vertical seams or overlaps.

When backhand welding, the welder starts at the bottom of the joint and works its way up. This technique can be used with most types of welding, including gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), and flux-cored arc welding (FCAW). Backhand welding is often used in conjunction with other techniques, such as weaving or oscillation, to create a strong weld.

What is the other name of the backward welding technique by GMAW?

The other name of the backward welding technique by GMAW is drag welding.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of backhand welding?

The advantages of backhand welding are:

  • it allows the welder to see the weld pool and the arc more clearly than in forward welding,
  • and it can be used to weld in hard-to-reach places.

The disadvantages of backhand welding are:

  • it can be more difficult to control the torch or gun when welding in the reverse direction,
  • and since the welder is working against gravity, backhand welding can be more tiring than forward welding.

What is forward and backward welding?

In welding, forward welding is when the welding torch or gun is directed in the same direction as the direction of welding. Backward welding is when the welding torch or gun is directed opposite to the direction of welding.

What is forehand welding?

Forehand welding is a welding technique where the welding torch or gun is directed in the same direction as the direction of welding. This can be used in situations where it is easy to weld in the conventional forward direction, such as when welding flat seams or lap joints.

Backhand welding angle

The angle of the welding torch or gun in backhand welding is usually between 15 and 30 degrees. This allows the welder to see the weld pool more clearly and prevents the torch or gun from getting in the way of the arc.
